Alex was born and raised in San Francisco’s Inner Sunset district. He first fly fished for native cutthroat and other trout in the waters of Grand Teton National Park, Wyoming. Alex’s first fish caught on a fly was at the ripe young age of three, with a bit of help from his father and uncle. Fly fishing is a family affair with the McHurons, and it is common to find three generations of them on the same river, or even in the same drift boat.
Alex earned a degree in Environmental Policy and Marine Science from Western Washington University in Bellingham, WA. While living in the Pacific Northwest, he started fishing for large sea-run rainbows and came down with a chronic case of chrome fever. After graduating from college, Alex returned to the Bay Area as a field biologist, spending his time off fishing in Northern California, Oregon and Washington. His life and passion have become fly fishing, he even managed to persuade his wife that the perfect honeymoon would be a fly fishing trip to Belize (he is still paying for this one).
Alex joined the California Fly Shop team part-time in 2007 and recently came onboard full time. He manages the fly and fly-tying department and also oversees their growing travel department. Alex enjoys fly-tying, including tinkering with classics, and creating new ties that entice fish. His favorite targets include steelhead with a spey rod, striped bass, and fish on the flats from Florida to Central America.
