New Desitinations, New Beginnings
"Captain Bailey Short poling the Louisiana marsh for wintertime Reds."
2020 has been a whirlwind for all of us across the globe. With many lock downs and travel restrictions sweeping the nation and making sneaking off to your favorite fishing destination near impossible, it's hard to find a glimmer of hope. But don't worry, that glimmer is actually shining very brightly right here in our very own continent of North America.
From the Keys to the shores of Mexico, there are some great opportunities for fall/winter fishing here domestically. Grab your pen and note pad and get ready as we set you up for some awesome fall/winter destinations.
Our first destination stateside is Florida. This is a destination that offers great fishing year-round and especially in the winter. For a quick synopsis of the types of opportunities you can expect from the Sunshine State from Oct to Jan, we catch up with highly regarded Florida Captain Steve Hancock:
Key West Fly and Spin Fishing Charters of The Lower Keys. Key West offers a wide variety of angling opportunities, fishing experiences, and adventures.
We fish the shallow, crystal-clear waters of the flats, but also the nearby deeper waters of the 3rd largest reef in the world with wrecks and offshore deep water. With a variety of shallow and offshore pelagic species to target, we have you covered!
We also have access to multiple types of boats to get you to the action! Whether it be fishing from a 17' technical poling skiff in the shallows (targeting tarpon, permit, bonefish, redfish, jacks, trout, sharks, barracuda), or from a 24' center console bay boat (fishing the reef, wrecks, and offshore waters, targeting yellowtail, snapper, various jack species, dolphin (Mahi), kingfish, sailfish, and black fin tuna on fly), we got it all!
The lower Florida Keys and Key West always have something to fish for!

Our next stop has just as much good food to try as the amount of fishing opportunities available. We headed south to Louisiana to speak with longtime friend of Hatch and world-renowned Captain Greg Moon.
Capt. Greg Moon:
Fishing Louisiana in the winter time is the classic red fishing experience. Working the marsh flats and bank edges in search of tailing and backing trophy-class redfish is the name of the game in the wintertime. Sunny days encourage redfish to float high in the water column and warm up, giving anglers a chance to cast at a “floating stop sign”. Wintertime can also bring schools of bull reds into the marsh, which also offer exciting opportunities for anglers. Redfish are competitive by nature and when you have a group in front of you, your fly is sure to get eaten.

"I may not know much about other things, but I definitely know fly fishing and I especially know extremely professional and extremely personally cool fly fishing guides: Captain Greg Moon is my favorite, all-time! Period!"

In our home state there is plenty of fishing opportunities that range from famous fishing rivers like the Sacramento and Trinity River, lakes like Clear Lake or the infamous Bullard's Bar, to the wide variety of species to target in the Pacific Ocean. California offers an endless amount of world class fishing, but this time we want to focus on the southern end of the state. If you're in the Los Angeles area on a business trip or vacation and you want to get some world-class saltwater action in while you’re here, well look no further than Hatch Pro Staff Member Captain Vaughn Podmore.
Hey Guys, Captain Vaughn Here,
In October/November I’m still doing trips to Catalina for Yellowtail, Bonito, and Calicos, and come December, there are still Bonito and Calicos at the island. I also start fishing local half days in LA/Long Beach for Calicos and my evening trips start and run through May. Bonito and Bass are also still biting through the winter months at Catalina. It can be really great out here in the wintertime.

Now if you’re looking to get away and gain cultural experience and enjoy some of the best fishing of your life, then you need to get down to Baja. And we have just the guy you need to see - Captain Lance Peterson.
Capt Lance Peterson:
Need a dose of warm, salt water fishing in an exotic location? Look no further than Southern Baja.
Beginning in October, Magdalena Bay on Baja's Pacific coast offers some of the world's best fly fishing for striped marlin and other pelagic species including Dorado, Wahoo, and Tuna. Renowned pile-ups of bait and ravenous gamefish can result in mind blowing feeding frenzies and sight casting opportunities the likes of which very few have experienced. I provide guided fly fishing trips on pangas, center consoles, and luxury yachts for unforgettable adventures on Mexico's most productive fishing grounds.
