Capt. Derek grew up on the South Shore of Massachusetts. He spent all of his spare time chasing stripers, blues, and false albacore around the shorelines of the Bay State. In his early twenties, he moved to California and started his guiding career for trout in the Northern Sierras as a walk/wade guide in the Tahoe area. In the off season, Derek would spend all of his money traveling to the Forida Keys to chase tarpon, permit and bones. This is where he developed his love for sightfishing. After fishing the Keys, it was hard for him to transfer back into trout fishing. A passion for sightfishing close to home got him started on fishing for carp in the local rivers. Carp are a worthy adversary that tail, mud, and push water on the shallow mud flats around the country, For Derek, they were as close to flats fishing as he could get. After a few years of saving and spending all his money trying to stand on the pointy end of a skiff in the Keys, Derek made a move to the Forida Keys full time to continue his guiding career.
Capt. Derek guides in the middle keys out of Hawk’s Cay Resort, and trailers his Hell’s Bay Marquesa all over southern Florida to chase just about everything that swims on fly. He spends all of his free time chasing permit, tarpon, and bonefish around the middle and lower keys exploring this vast fishery. Derek is a licensed USCG Captain, and will work hard to put you on fish. He loves to share his passion for fly fishing and the outdoors with others. He guides anglers of all ability levels and provides professional, memorable experiences for all of his customers.
