John Arnold

John Arnold has been a fly fishing guide his entire adult life. After a brief flirtation with America’s state university system, he decided that life on the water provided more satisfaction. At 20 John began guiding the waters of the Sun Valley, ID area where he developed an addiction to technical dry fly fishing. From there he moved on to the rivers of Southwest Montana, as well as providing guided Steelhead trips on the Grande Ronde and Snake Rivers. In 2000 he started his own outfitting company headquartered on the Missouri River where he still lives and operates. John currently is the co-owner of Headhunters Fly Shop in Craig, MT. Guiding has recently taken a back seat to managing the shop, raising a family and capturing photos and videos, but you’ll often find him swinging a two-hander during the off-season on the Missouri.

John has spent much of his life chasing Steelhead in BC and the lower 48, often with his wife Julie. He also spent many years as a commercial fly-tyer specializing in destination specific flies for Steelheadd, Atlantic Salmon and Sea-trout. Recently, John and his staff have been instrumental in bringing two-handed fishing techniques to the rivers of Montana, and he spends much of his time teaching Spey Casting and fishing techniques to a new generation of two-handed trout anglers. When not fishing, John, Julie and daughter Adair spend time exploring the Front Range of Montana, skiing, traveling and – of course – fishing.
