I’ve been doing some sort of fishing as far back as I can remember, as a little fellow camping with the family in the Rocky Mountains. Started fly fishing around eleven or twelve years old. Actually learned to tie flys first from my grandpa at his cabin near Pagosa Springs, CO. In 1991, my senior year in high school, I got a job working at a fly shop in town and started guiding on the San Juan that summer. I have worked with many different outfitters over the years. In 1999 started guiding through Soaring Eagle Lodge located on the San Juan River and in 2001 went exclusive with Soaring Eagle. I am also doing trips through my own business (Trout Snouts Angling) which I started a couple of years ago. With a few bumps in the road early on, I have been able to do what I love for the better part of twenty-two years, all on the San Juan River. There is no end insight, for I will continue guiding as long as my body lets me. My love for the sport comes from my late fathers love of the sport, fishing was his passion, and he infected my younger brother(TJ Massey) and myself with that same passion. I’m sure I will enjoy many more years of fishing on San Juan.
