Joe Sowerby is the owner of Montana Flyfishing Connection, which specializes in multi-day flyfishing float trips on Montana’s famed Smith River as well as the South Fork of the Flathead River in the middle of the Bob Marshall Wilderness. Originally from Maine, Joe grew up pulling lobster traps and hunting and fishing for everything he could. He was lucky enough to be invited on a trip to Montana when he was 11 years old, and that was it! He returned many times and finally moved out for good. He started guiding the waters of Western Montana at 18, and soon thereafter, he was asked to work a trip on the Smith River. The 60 mile remote camping float trip had such an impression on him, that he became determined to make that spectacular river part of his life forever.
Joe spends his seasons leading these expeditions and chasing hatches around Montana. In addition to guiding fly fisherman in Montana continuously since 1993, he has also done stints of guiding hunting in Montana and Wyoming, and spent a year running Safari camps in remote areas of Tanzania, Africa. He lives in Missoula, Montana with his amazing wife Carroll Anne, two Yellow Labs, and soon to be 2 kids.
